::Uganda Hosts its 1st Business Process Outsourcing Conference & Expo.
Uganda hosted its first Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Conference and Expo on the 25th – 26th June 2009 at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. Organized by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the conference aimed to showcase Uganda’s ability to embrace BPO business and promote the country as a favorable outsourcing destination within the region.
BPO is a form of outsourcing that involves the contracting of the operations and responsibilities of a specific business functions (or processes) to a third-party service provide. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Process_Outsourcing) By outsourcing their back office business processes to cheaper nations like China, India, Philippines, Mexico, South Africa etc, companies can cut costs, better concentrate on their core businesses and strengths, ensure better customer satisfaction and in a way get an edge over their competitors.
In Uganda, the Outsourcing industry has potential to propel growth of the economy through attracting investment and creating employment, given its strategic location and the readily available human resource base.
To promote BPO, the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has put in place measures to create a conducive environment for the implementation of the BPO Strategy and Model. Incentives include among others, the cyber laws the Bills of which are now before parliament, support on infrastructure, human resource capacity building, marketing, financial support and entrepreneurship development.
The conference provided a platform for potential clients to interface with local BPO operators and explore ways of engaging each other to catalyze the growth of the BPO industry in Uganda. Guest speakers from countries that have greatly benefitted from BPO such as South Africa, Mauritius, India and Ghana shared their experiences and tactics necessary for BPO sector growth. Topics discussed ranged from quality control, international marketing, and human resource issues to best practices that could be adopted by the local BPO industry to propel it to the international market. Strategies of collaboration and synergies were also developed and discussed to assist Uganda in creating development in the BPO Industry.
Data Fundi provides the necessary infrastructure and technical support needed by BPO to run their operations. Consequently, the company was among the local firms invited by the Ministry to take part in the exhibition which run during the conference.
